Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state and his predecessor Ayodele Fayose put their differences aside on Wednesday, March 6 when they embraced each other at a ceremony in Lagos in honour of a legal luminary, Afe Babalola (SAN).
Babalola, who is the founder of Afe Babalola University, was honoured with the 2018 Obafemi Awolowo Prize for leadership.
According to information gathered by Legit.ng, Fayemi delivered a speech and approached his seat, Fayose stood to greet him. The governor opened his arms and embraced his predecessor.
Among those that attended the event were former head of state and ex-secretary general of Commonwealth, Yakubu Gowon and Emeka Anyaoku, respectively. Prominent traditional rulers and politicians also graced the occasion.
Fayemi and Fayose are political rivals. who have in recent times engaged in war of words over policies, electoral victory and Ekiti state politics generally.
At the event, Fayemi said “I am immensely proud that baba (Afe Babalola) is from Ekiti. You have restored our values for us.With you around, at least no one can accuse us of being the state of stomach infrastructure. They will definitely regard us as the fountain of knowledge.”
The governor’s statement was a veiled reference to Fayose’s “stomach infrastructure” policy. But the former governor ignored the criticism and displayed a rare show of love.
Both current and former governors raised their hands in solidarity as their clap and laughter erupted in the hall.
Meanwhile Legit.ng previously reported that Ekiti state governor, Kayode Fayemi, on Thursday, January 24, said former governor Ayodele Fayose left a total debt of over N155.79 billion for the state.
This was as the governor signed into law, the N129.9bn state budget for 2019, as part of events to mark his 100 days in office.
The governor said while giving account of his stewardship in Ado Ekiti the debt profile included local loans and other debts.
He gave the breakdown of the debts as; loans, N57.694 billion; unpaid salary arrears, N16.777 billion; outstanding leave bonus to workers, N4.402 billion; pension and gratuity arrears, N39.775 billion; outstanding corpers’ allowance, N28.883 million.

Others were; outstanding subventions to institutions, N4.770 billion; outstanding contractors’ claims, N28.575 billion; outstanding furniture allowance, N470.2 million; outstanding severance allowance, N586.144 million; monetised vehicle arrears, N101.243 million; outstanding FIRS obligation; N184.2 million; traditional rulers arrears, N150.214 million; judgement debts, N95.214 million and other outstanding liabilities of N1.792 bilion.
